ULMA promotes the generation of its own electricity using renewable sources at its facilities
The installation of photovoltaic panels is of special interest to companies such as ULMA Construction, as they have large areas available to accommodate enough photovoltaic panels to generate significant amounts of renewable energy. Furthermore, the working hours, the hours during which the highest energy consumption occurs, mostly coincide with the hours of sunshine, when photovoltaic energy is produced.
In line with its commitment to corporate sustainability, ULMA Construction is committed to producing renewable energy at its facilities, which will help reduce the organization's carbon footprint. With this objective in mind, 108 solar panels have been installed at the work centre located in Barcelona. The facility, which became operational in May, has a maximum production capacity of 61.02 kW and will be able to reach an annual production of 161,381 kW, representing an annual saving of 36.19% in energy consumption at this location. The panels installed in Barcelona will therefore generate annual savings of 11.68 tonnes of CO2, which is equivalent to preventing the felling of 1,110 trees.
This installation joins those already operational at other ULMA Construction work centres: the sites in Germany, Brazil, Poland and Portugal produced a total of 393,256 kWh during 2024 and have their own photovoltaic panels connected to the grid, which also allow surplus production to be fed back into the grid.
As a result, in 2024, almost 50% more energy was generated than in 2023, when 266,787 kWh of self-produced photovoltaic energy was recorded. This growth is mainly due to the commissioning of photovoltaic installations at the headquarters in Brazil, which have strengthened those already in operation in the aforementioned countries.
ULMA has embarked on a long journey towards generating its own renewable energy, with plans to increase the number of work centres that benefit from this resource. Studies initiated this year for the upcoming installation and commissioning of solar panels at the headquarters in Chile, among other locations, corroborate the consolidation and growth in this direction.
Generating our own energy has numerous benefits for both the environment and society, besides increasing renewable energy production capacity. This means not only medium- and long-term cost savings for the company. Reducing emissions associated with energy consumption contributes to the fight against climate change and to caring for and protecting the environment, one of the greatest social challenges of the 21st century.
This is one of the measures adopted by ULMA to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions produced by its activity and forms part of the Climate Action and Sustainable Energy pillars of ULMA Construction's 2023-2025 Sustainability Strategy, which establishes climate neutrality by 2050 as one of its goals, in accordance with the objectives set out in the Paris Agreement.
